The Browns should trade Josh Gordon, the Chiefs should trade for him

The Cleveland Browns need to build a team looking towards the future with the recent first round accusation of Johnny Manziel, and the Kansas City Chiefs need to put together a team for the now with the likes of Alex Smith and Jamaal Charles. Josh was being offered for a second round pick last year for off field issues. He is a risk worth a reward!

Summary

Josh Gordon is a superb receiver who can catch almost anything thrown his way. He will draw eyes anywhere on the field, inconveniently he will also draw eyes anywhere off the field. He is about to receive his second major suspension from the NFL, a third could be a lifetime ban.  He is a major risk for any team with long term aspirations for the player because of his off field concerns.

Josh Gordon's market value

What we know

  • He has two cheap team years left under control with at least a six game suspension upcoming
  • He is two of three strikes from a NFL ban
  • He is very young
  • He is an excellent talent

The Chiefs reasons for the trade

What the Chiefs would gain

  • A receiver who can actually catch
  • A player who can expand the field
  • Youth

What the chiefs would give up

  • Conditional 4th and 6th round picks depending on completion of his remaining two years
  • Guaranteed future 4th pick of later year
  • Future talent

The Browns reasons for the trade

What the Browns gain

  • Future talent
  • Salary cap space
  • Less negative off field publicity
  • Guaranteed future flexibility

What the Browns lose

  • Their best offensive weapon
  • Their biggest team distraction
  • Their biggest risk
