Pressures of Year Round Youth Sports

A recent trend in singular year round youth sports has emerged fueled by overzealous coaches pressuring children to give up multiple (seasonal) sports to focus on just one. This should change.

I have been coaching for over 19 years ranging from soccer to baseball to football. Football has been my focus the last fourteen years. I have seen a disturbing recent trend in coaches pressuring and convincing children and their parents that if they don't stay involved with a particular sport year round, they will some how fall behind.

I feel some of the best athletes are the kids that play and enjoy multiple sports. They are more well rounded mentally and physically. I believe it gives their bodies a rest from repetition. Burn out is a real factor in year round singular sports. I think over the long run athletes stay more interested in sports when played in seasons.

Parents and coaches should keep in mind the athletes well being before putting these kind of unneeded pressures on them.

This is totally becoming a problem. An obvious example of harm is the crazy amount of stress put on the arms of young professional pitchers. Doctors believe that a person only has so many pitches, and many kids with big-league talent are using up their bullets as amateurs
